Lake Grapevine Lake Grapevine is northwest of downtown Dallas, and just north of DFW airport. Grapevine is a popular when the winds are from the Northwest; the swell can get BIG. Otherwise Grapevine is known for its steep banks and cliffs. Since quite a few marinas ring the lake, sailers need to be careful contending with potentially significant power boat traffic. Like most North Texas lakes, water levels vary with the season. At Grapevine, it can vary by as much as 15 feet in a dry summer. Launch Sites:· Rockledge Park · Lakeview Park · Sand Bass Point · Oak Grove Park |

Rockledge ParkRockledge Park on Lake Grapevine is a good spot for sideshore northwest or southeast winds while north winds will tend to be offshore. Rockledge Park starts in Grapevine and runs about nine miles along the north shore of the lake through Murrel Park. There are cliffs that jut out into the water with scalloped shaped beach areas between the cliffs. The beach is composed of small rocks, but changes to grass as you get closer to the roads. The water gets deep about 40 to 50 feet from the shore. There are covered picnic tables on top of the cliffs. There is plenty of grass for rigging. Parking is limited to about 20 vehicles. Restrooms are about 100 yards away. Beginners Beware! - In north winds, you could wash up on the other side of the lake. And in northwest winds, you could wash up on the dam. Directions:To get there from 1171: · Take 2499 south (Long Prairie Rd. in Flower Mound - turns into International Pkwy in Grapevine at Lakeside Pkwy) · Turn right on Silveron Blvd. Note: The road sign actually says Lakeside Pkwy - it's the second "Lakeside Pkwy" sign you'll come to. · Turn left (around the circle) on to Fairway Dr. · You will see Griffis Corner store to your right, and just before it on your left will be the entrance to Rockledge Park.
From I-635 and I-35: · Take 635 west to the Bass Pro exit. · Turn left on Bass Pro. · Turn left on Hwy 26 (the first big street). · Take the first right into the park. · Go across the dam. · Take the first left and you will be at Rockledge. · Take a right at the Y in the road. |
Lakeview ParkLakeview launch is on the opposite side of the lake from Rockledge. NTWR has run a few of its Learn To Windsurf days here. Directions:· Take 114 west to the Kimball Ave. exit. · Take a right and go north on Kimball Ave. · Kimball curves around to the east, stay on it. · When you get to Lakeview Street, take a left. · Follow Lakeview Street until you reach the water. Sand Bass PointSand Bass park is on the South side of the lake, near Scotts Landing Marina, and it is the least used windsurfing launch on the lake. The bottom is mud and slopes very gradually out into the lake. There is a boat ramp and the entrance to the marina's cove. This is a popular area for jet skis and swimming during the summer months. Hence it is one of the busiest areas on the lake for boat traffic. The restrooms are about 1/2 mile from the launch. There is parking for at least 50 vehicles and about a 1/2 acre for the rigging with several covered picnic tables. This launch is good in all wind directions, but south winds will be offshore. Oak Grove ParkOak Grove Park is on the South side and midway up the lake. The launch is very similar to Sand Bass Point, with several covered picnic tables and a restroom. It has about a 2 acre rigging area. The bottom is mud and slopes gently. There is a boat ramp on the west side of the area, but it is not that busy. Other Links: |
